Irfan Pathan threw light on the possible reasons behind this Jasprit BumrahHe has not been able to take any wicket in the current Indian Premier League 2026. The right-arm fast bowler has failed to take a single wicket in five matches and finished with figures of 1/41 against Punjab Kings at the Wankhede Stadium.
Pathan feels that Bumrah needs to change the length of his slower balls. He suggested that the fast bowler was bowling too short and not bowling at a consistent pace. Mumbai Indians lost the match against Punjab Kings by seven wickets on 16 April.
“Jasprit Bumrah not taking wickets is a problem for him. He is not able to bowl fast, and his slow balls are short. He needs to step it up. He doesn't look injured, but I think these two things are causing problems. He needs to bowl slower and bowl more fast balls,” Pathan said on his YouTube channel.
Pathan praised Shreyas Iyer's leadership and batting. Iyer scored 66 runs in 35 balls and helped his team achieve the target of 196 runs in just 16.3 overs. Pathan pointed out that the batsman anticipated Jasprit Bumrah's short-pitched delivery and sent it for a maximum.
“Shreyas Iyer runs the game very well when he is on the field, rotating his bowlers all the way. We have seen this already, but when he bats, it seems he never loses control, be it chasing, bowling, or shot selection. When he hit Bumrah for a six off the short ball, it felt as if he was waiting for Bumrah to bowl the short ball. We were surprised by the fours he hit last year. “Can't forget, and he hit another amazing shot. We can see total cruise control in his batting,” Pathan said.
Pathan highlighted that wicketkeeper-batsman Prabhsimran Singh was the top performer with the bat. He scored 80 runs off 39 balls, which included two sixes and 11 fours, and Pathan pointed out that he has shown a lot of improvement and has become a more mature player.
“No matter how much you praise this 80 not out, it won't be enough. He has shown very good control and improvement. He scored 500 runs last year, and looked like he was a good player who could bat aggressively. But he has shown maturity this year. He is targeting his bowlers and also stepping up against the slower bowlers. He has been able to handle the slower bowlers from Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur. He knew that he might not be able to take the field against Bumrah, but he showed aggression while facing him,” Pathan concluded.
