He was the last surviving member of the Indian team that defeated England in a Test match in 1952, their first win in the longest format. Before his death, Gopinath was India's oldest Test cricketer.
“To pay tribute to Mr. Gopinath, KKR players will wear black armbands during the CSK vs KKR match in Chennai tonight,” the KKR management said in a statement.
Gopinath was a right-handed batsman who made his international debut in December 1951 against England. He played eight Test matches, scoring 242 runs and taking one wicket. In the first-class circuit he made 83 appearances and scored a total of 4259 runs at an average of 42.16. This includes the highest score of 234. He also took 14 wickets with the ball.
After quitting his playing career, Gopinath worked as a national selector, including chairman, and later managed the Indian team during the tour of England in 1979.
Another run-fest on the cards
Chennai Super Kings will be happy with their batting performance after Knight Riders won the toss and decided to bowl first. At the end of 16 overs their score was 162/6.
