caught by finn allen Digvesh Singh Rathi Prince Yadav bowled in the second over of the game in Match 15 of IPL 2026 between Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Digvesh was positioned at deep third man and completed a sharp catch a few inches away from the boundary ropes.
The umpires declared the catch clean and as a result, Allen had to be walked long after scoring nine runs out of eight. However, the real drama began when television replays of the dismissal indicated that there might have been a possibility that Digvesh's left foot might have touched a boundary cushion, as it looked very close to the case when viewed from multiple angles and in slow motion.
It is noteworthy that nowadays, due to the use of technology, the level of umpiring in IPL has become very high. Quick boundary checks and referrals by the third umpire just seconds after the actual incident have allowed faster decisions to be made, saving considerable time in ensuring that the match is finished within the allotted time and minimizing the time required for television replays.
However, damage was done, e.g. allenDue to his dismissal, KKR's first wicket fell at the beginning of the innings.
However, a group of fans continued to debate the fairness of the catch on social media. Many fans expressed their views on their social media handle 'X' (formerly known as Twitter), and questioned whether there was any need for a hasty decision by the third umpire of the ongoing match, KN Ananthpadmanabhan.
Here's how 'X' reacted to Digvesh Singh Rathi's controversial catch in IPL 2026
@IPL What's the point of spending so much on technology if you can't use it properly? Rathi took a catch at the boundary and touched the rope while taking the catch and the umpire did not bother to check the technique. This is PSL not IPL so use technique #iplindia2026 #play fair

The umpire took so much time for that Shami catch of Ajinkya Rahane but did not take any time for Finn Allen's decision which clearly looked like a six.

It's nice that we can spend 15 minutes examining the wides 3 feet above the batsman's head, but when deciding whether the biggest wicket of the game has fallen or not, they just look at things like that for 5 seconds and send him on his way. pic.twitter.com/JeI9aWjYq7

This is not just bad umpiring but also shameful for the IPL.
Digvesh Rathi takes the catch by running backwards and unbalanced, right next to the boundary rope and the umpire does not even check properly whether it is clean or not?
No clear angle, no zoom on the rope, no proper review… just give it… https://t.co/ZmLuwCoAg

Finn Allen was caught by Digvesh Rathi, whose foot was touching the boundary. 👀
So why didn't the third umpire check it? 🤔
He was clearly not out. If they can't properly assess a simple catch, what's the point of calling it a big fair league? and why is that… pic.twitter.com/8XWSMZLnM9
