KKR-PBKS match at Eden Gardens canceled due to rain, both teams divided points

Indian Premier League The (IPL) 2026 match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) was abandoned due to continuous rain at the Eden Gardens on Monday, April 6. The cancellation meant that both teams shared one point each, affecting the starting standings of the tournament.

KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and took the surprising decision to bat first despite overcast and seam-friendly conditions. The decision quickly backfired as the three-time champion suffered an early defeat. In a tremendous opening spell, Xavier Bartlett dismissed Finn Allen and Cameron Green twice in the same over. Both batsmen bowled swinging balls behind the stumps, where Prabhsimran Singh dismissed him.

At 25/2 in just 3.4 overs, KKR were under early pressure, with Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi looking to steady the innings at the crease. However, rain interrupted play at that time and continued unabated, preventing any further action on the field. Although the rain eventually subsided, the outfield remained too wet for play to resume safely.

The umpires inspected but determined that the conditions were unsuitable, and there was also insufficient time to organize a reduced five-over contest. The match was officially called off after discussions with both the captains, Rahane and Shreyas Iyer.

The situation changed little with the shared scores. KKR have dropped to eighth place, having now suffered two defeats in three matches, reflecting a tough start to their campaign. They had earlier lost to Mumbai Indians (MI) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). PBKS, on the other hand, continued their strong start to the season after wins over Gujarat Titans (GT) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to top the table with five points.

Looking ahead, PBKS are scheduled to face SRH on April 11 at the Maharaja Yadvendra Singh International Cricket Stadium, New Chandigarh. Meanwhile, KKR will aim to bounce back when they take on Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Eden Gardens on April 9.
