The first innings was one of two halves. Lucknow Super Giants dominated the first 10 overs as they restricted Sunrisers to 22/3 at the end of the powerplay. Mohammed Shami dismissed both the openers in a brilliant spell of fast bowling and finished with match figures of 2/9 from his four overs.
Coming together at 26/4 in the eighth over, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen set the stage for their innings by making a brilliant partnership of 116 runs. The pair set the stage for the innings by scoring half-centuries as SRH reached 156/9 despite losing wickets at the end of the innings.
In reply, Lucknow Super Giants made a strong start to their innings scoring 53 runs in the powerplay. Markram scored a brilliant 45 runs, while Rishabh Pant, who came in at number three, had a slow start. While achieving the odd boundary, he continued to reduce the score on the platform made in the first six overs. Despite the fall of wickets at the other end, Pant held his own at the other end and led Lucknow to victory with one ball to spare.
talking points
1) Shami's spectacular resurgence
One of India's most skilled fast bowlers, Mohammed Shami once again showed his class with an extraordinary spell of 2/9 in his four overs. Bowling three overs first, he kept the SRH batsmen in check with his accuracy in line and length. He dismissed the dangerous Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma with slower balls. It was a brilliant performance from Shami, which showed that his long injury layoff hasn't hurt him one bit.
2) Reddy, Klaasen move ahead
Relying on the starts provided by their openers, Sunrisers have been regarded as top-heavy, with the middle order not doing much. But after the top-order was wiped out, it was Nitish Kumar Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen who came together to save the innings. The pair put up a strong partnership of 116 runs in just 63 balls and braved the Lucknow bowlers, who looked unfit to play that day. SRH will rely on Klaasen and Reddy to continue this form, as a bankable option in games where the top order fails.
3) Pant gets runs, but not easily
Rishabh Pant It will be a relief to get back in the running, but he has not been at his best yet. He fought hard to score 68 runs after scoring 50 runs. However, he made sure to hold on till the end and lead Lucknow to victory. At his best, he is a destructive batsman, able to change gears at will. But he has yet to show that potential, and looks like a shadow of his former self. Being the captain of Lucknow Super Giants, his form with the bat will be a big factor in Lucknow's success this season.
who said what?
Ishan Kishan, Captain Sunrisers Hyderabad
“It was a good game, the total was not high enough. The bowlers bowled according to plan, credit to the fielders too but one or two fours here and there can take the match. Losing four wickets early puts pressure on other batsmen, but credit to the classy side.” [Klaasen] And Nitish for taking us beyond 150. Rishabh played well when they were losing wickets. That score was difficult to defend, taking it till the last over gives us a positive sign. Harsh bowled exceptionally well, hopefully he continues.”
Rishabh Pant, Captain of Lucknow Super Giants
“Staying till the end and finishing the game is a big plus. With the bowlers, you have to appreciate them because they prepared the game. Shami, Avesh, Rathi all contributed. Siddharth too. We feel there is never a perfect match, as important as the management, but appreciate the effort and focus on execution. All that ends well is good, for me personally, I know I am preparing well. I am preparing well with my bat. Let me talk. My coworkers and management see how hard I work, that's what matters.”
Mohammed Shami, Player of the Match
“I am happy. We lost our losing game, winning this game was important to build momentum. If you want to play, it is important to be in touch with the game. If you are fit, only then you can work on your skills. That is why I kept in touch with the game and played all the home games. Without skill or experience, nothing happens. But you have to adapt. I was here last year and used a lot of slow guys. The opponents used it a lot, I thought. Why don't we too?”
