Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated Kolkata Knight Riders in spectacular fashion by 65 runs in the sixth match of 2026. Indian Premier League at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata to claim their first win in the IPL this season.
Asked to bat first, SRH took full advantage of the conditions and got off to a great start, with Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma putting on a quickfire 82-run stand that put KKR under immediate pressure. Head played a quick inning of 46 runs in 21 balls, while Abhishek contributed 48 runs in the same number of balls.
This momentum was carried forward by the middle order, with Heinrich Klaasen playing a crucial inning of 52 runs, while Nitish Kumar Reddy added 39 runs in 24 balls. Despite some late wickets, SRH managed to post a strong score of 226/8 in their 20 overs.
In reply, KKR needed a strong start but lost wickets at regular intervals, making it difficult to chase the target. Finn Allen provided some early fireworks with a quickfire 28 off 7 balls, while Angkrish Raghuvanshi tried to get the innings going with a quickfire 52 off 29 balls.
Rinku Singh scored 35 runs, but lack of partnership hurt KKR as they fell short of the required rate. Ultimately, they were all out for 161 runs in 16 overs, falling well short of the target. They lost the match by 65 runs.
talking points
1) Head-Abhishek Blitz has set the tone
Early partnership between Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma Proved to be the decisive phase of the match. His aggressive intent and fearless strokeplay in the powerplay allowed SRH to gain early control.
The 82-run partnership ensured that Hyderabad set their position right from the start, allowing KKR to chase the game from the start. It was a massacre from the SRH openers.
2) Prevents middle order recession
After an explosive start, SRH's middle order ensured that the momentum was not lost. Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy made some important contributions in the middle overs, keeping the scoring rate high. His ability to maintain the pressure meant that KKR never got a chance to pull things back.
3) KKR's inconsistent chase
Chasing a challenging score, KKR never managed to build a solid partnership. While there were flashes of brilliance from Raghuvanshi, Rinku Singh and Finn Allen, the lack of consistent partnerships and regular wickets meant they always lagged behind in the chase.
Jaydev Unadkat was the star of the show by taking three wickets. Reddy and Ishaan Malinga praised him a lot. Reddy was named player of the match for his all-round performance.
who said what?
Ajinkya Rahane, KKR captain
“Yeah, I thought, no, we made some big partnerships. Those who were set needed to take the ball deep to the end [bat]. I thought we came back really well for 7-8 overs. inside the [10] Over, I thought they were 130, 140-odd. But with the ball, I thought we came back really well. In batting, when you are chasing a target, you know you need that partnership. We couldn't find him. So, we just have to go back to the drawing room, just think about our combinations. While bowling, if we can bring extra batsmen in our lineup, we have to think about it. But then, we got 3-4 days. We don't want to think too much. I think people are doing really well. Just a day off with the bat. We did really well in the last game. Just those small partnerships were needed. I think if the batsmen have a positive mindset and extra awareness while batting, I think we will be fine.”
Ishan Kishan, SRH captain
“Yes, not the way I played, but the way the rest of the team played. (“When I tell you, it's always the team,” Murali Karthik corrects) It's always the team, yes. Very happy with the way they were committed on the field and, you know, everyone was putting in their energy, and that was something I asked for before the game. And I was happy to see them all putting in their effort. (Was he happy with the score?) No, I was. I don't think the pitch was good to be honest. I think Travis Head and Abhishek played a beautiful innings there and, you know, scoring all 80 runs made the game easier for us because I think every batsman got extra time to take the singles and understand how the pitch was playing. So, to be very honest, I give credit to both the batsmen for carrying it till the end, so, I think it was a team effort overall. I think we're getting to know the areas of each game. So, yes, fielding is something we need to work on as a team. We cannot give more than 20 runs in each game. So, yes, we have to work there because, you know, in IPL, 20 or 10 runs make a huge difference in a T20 game. So, yes, we will work on this as a team.”
Nitish Kumar Reddy, Player of the Match
“I mean, it's really good. It's just the match-winning performance I was waiting for for a long time. Thankfully, I have performed at the right time. Even for my bowling, I got some limits on my own runs as well. (What have you been doing in the last few months and what have you worked on?) It's just I'm trying to stay positive because there are a lot of negative thoughts in my mind because last season didn't go my way and a lot of injuries. I didn't bowl last season and I wanted to work on my bowling a little bit, but just before the IPL season, I worked really hard on it and feel really, really happy. (How good is your body feeling?) I mean, thanks to the trainers and physio who are taking care of me.
