IPL 2026: 'He likes leadership' – SRH coach Daniel Vettori backs captain Ishan Kishan

Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Daniel Vettori Has expressed confidence in Ishan Kishan's leadership and said that the additional responsibility is likely to have a positive impact on both his batting and wicketkeeping. Kishan is currently leading SRH in the absence of Pat Cummins, who is expected to join the playing eleven later in the tournament.

Speaking ahead of SRH's clash against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens, Vettori dismissed any concerns about Cummins' absence impacting the leadership group.

“We're quite fortunate that Pat has been around the group and he's been able to have conversations with Ishan about his captaincy style. But Ishan has been extremely successful in his captaincy career so far. So although it might be a little different, we don't mind that [no Cummins on the field] as absolutely negative [from the point of view of captaincy]Vettori was quoted by ESPNcricinfo as saying.

Former New Zealand captain shed light on this KishanHis enthusiasm for leadership was evident in his performance during SRH's opening game against RCB, where he scored a brilliant 80 off just 38 balls.

He said, “As you saw Ishan's performance in the first game, he likes leadership, he likes being out there and I think that can have a really positive impact on his batting and keeping. As he understands the group and the dynamics, he is going to leave his mark on it and I have no doubt that he will be a very effective leader for us.”

Vettori also highlighted the challenges faced by bowlers when trying to contain the aggressive left-hander, emphasizing his all-round dominance against different bowling styles.

“There is very little margin for error [when bowling to Kishan] And his ability to hit both sides of the wicket, hit behind the wicket and then tackle the full ball aggressively means he puts direct pressure on the bowler. There is no style of bowling against which he is ineffective, so you cannot stop him with spin. And fast bowling, he tackles exceptionally well,” Vettori explained.

“So immediately, when he comes to the crease, he has the confidence and understanding of his game that he can take it. He is ready to take on the bowler from the first ball and that takes a lot of pressure off,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, looking ahead to the upcoming encounter, Vettori made it clear that SRH will not underestimate KKR's spin duo of Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine, despite their poor performance in the last match.

With both teams losing despite scoring over 200, the encounter promises to be a high-scoring encounter where performance with the ball could prove to be the difference.
